VIRGINIA PARENT FAQ

Quick answers before you enroll

Use these answers to decide whether Southeast Academy is the right online Christian school option for your family.

Yes. Many Virginia families use an online program as part of home instruction. Under Virginia's home instruction law, you file a Notice of Intent with your local school division, include a list of the subjects your child will study, and show that you meet one of Virginia's criteria for providing home instruction.

Virginia parents who choose home instruction generally submit an annual Notice of Intent to their local division superintendent by August 15, include a list of subjects to be studied, and provide evidence that the parent meets one of Virginia’s home instruction criteria, such as holding a high school diploma, meeting teacher qualifications, using a curriculum or program of study, or showing the ability to provide an adequate education.

Yes. Unlike some states, Virginia requires a new Notice of Intent every school year, filed by August 15 — last year's filing doesn't carry over. Virginia is a notification state, not a permission state, so once you've filed you can begin; the superintendent does not approve or deny your NOI. Southeast Academy's records and reporting help families stay organized for each year's filing.

Yes. By August 1 after each school year, parents give the division superintendent evidence of academic progress — either a composite score in or above the fourth stanine on any nationally normed standardized achievement test, or another accepted evaluation, such as an evaluation letter from a person licensed to teach in any state, or a person with a master's degree or higher in an academic discipline. This requirement starts at age 6, so children who are under the age of six as of September 30 of the school year are exempt. Southeast Academy includes standardized testing for grades 3–12; families with younger students who still owe evidence of progress can use the evaluation option.

No. Home-instructed students don't take Virginia's Standards of Learning (SOL) tests. Virginia's annual progress requirement is met with a nationally normed standardized achievement test or an approved evaluation instead — and Southeast Academy provides the standardized testing for grades 3–12.

You don’t have to wait until August. Southeast Academy accepts enrollment at any time during the year, including mid-year starts or after moving to Virginia. If you move into a Virginia school division or begin home instruction after the school year has started, notify the division superintendent of your intent to provide home instruction as soon as practicable and comply with the required home instruction documentation within 30 days. That makes it easier to switch without interrupting your child’s education.

Yes. Southeast Academy offers accredited programs with certified teacher support and grading, including diploma-track options for high school students.

Flexible pacing, optional 10- or 12-month structures, a Christian curriculum, dedicated teacher support, and a program designed for at-home learning—so school fits around your family's life and schedule.
